Hysterectomy for the greater good

Bird

Oh hey, I'm back with another mind splurge hope you don't mind ?

So I am currently one week post-op after having a full hysterectomy last Monday 2nd October.

I am alive which is flipping fantastic as both myself and our eldest daughter thought I would probably croak it on the operating table ! I even put on my new jumper with pretty sparkly birds on in case the worst happened and I didn't ever get to wear it ! I had dropped little hints as to what would be expected should I die, one being if my darling husband fell in love again as long as she was wonderful with our girls I wouldn't haunt him and another being Uncle Azza and Auntie Carrie had to teach the girls how to manage their finances growing up!

A brief explanation as to why I have needed the whole baby growing organs out is due to ovarian congestion syndrome which is basically varicose veins on my ovaries ! Feels as good as it sounds…..bloody painful!

I have tried a number of avenues before reaching the decision to have surgery which started out with tricking my body into a menopausal state! Believe me menopause aint any fun, although it stopped the pain which after three years of consistent pain was a dream!

Our biggest decision was whether we were done having babies naturally and for someone who loves babies this was a tough one! However I love the babies we've had and they need me healthy and happy so although fueled with emotion I always knew the answer to that question.

Anyhoo fast forward to last Monday 5:30am and I'm ever so anxious having a bath before we leave for the hospital. I was told to have a bath because although my consultant assured me she would wash my vagina pre-op she can only do so much(her exact words)!! Ha! It's a minefield in our lady gardens apparently !!

My main concern was getting the kids dropped off at their fairy godmothers for 7am and then I could relax and it be just the two of us waiting in hospital to go through the motions.

After what felt like forever and us talking about food numerous times (I wasnt allowed to eat so I was starving!) at 11:30am a lovely pair or porters came to wheel me down to the holding bay, where I had to give Paul a quick kiss and say bye. It is all a bit surreal from then on wards as i moved onto a trolley wrapped in a warm blanket and introduced to Yemi who was taking me to theatre.

I vaguely remember falling asleep and then trying to wake up once it was all over. It took me from about 2pm until 6:30pm in recovery before I could go back to my ward. Time in recovery flew by as I tried and tried to keep my eyes open! I must have looked like a baby owl and the nurse was giggling saying she wished she could have filmed me to show me later on!

Upon waking I didn't feel a great deal of pain where I had been cut across my tummy (much like a caesarean) but instead a horrendous need to wee ! It is standard practice to put in a catheter after a hysterectomy just for the first night and it was not nice !! You know that feeling when you are beyond desperate for the loo and its painful, well that is what it felt like! But once my blood pressure was more stable, I had had every painkiller available and a good black coffee I was pushed back up to my room where Paul was waiting and my parents had just arrived !

I cannot thank the hospital staff enough they were awesome, every single one of them and I was just so happy to be alive !

Thank you for reading and stay tuned for the next installment which may not be pretty but it will be positive !
